Happy International Women’s Day! This is an extra special one, being it’s the 100th anniversary and people are celebrating all over the globe. Here at PhD in Sexy we’d like to celebrate women by giving out honorary PhDs in Sexy.
Our Awards Go To:
Superhero: X-men. The comic book series is relaunching in April 2013 with an entire female team, which Marvel is hoping will draw in more female readers. The team consists of Storm, my favorite Psylocke (see me dressed up as Psylocke at Comicon 2011), Rachel Grey, Kitty Pryde, and Rogue.
Musician: Gwen Stefani is the lead singer of No Doubt, mother, wife of Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, and let’s not forget fashion designer and owner of L.A.M.B. She’s a perfectly polished punk rock fashion icon who seems to never age yet isn’t a diva. When I grow up I want to be her.
Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, the Oscar-winning star of the Hunger Games Trilogy, doesn’t pretend to be someone she’s not. Yes, she’s super talented and gorgeous, yet she’s never fake nice, always makes fun of herself and even gave the finger at Oscar parties in a $10,000 dollar dress. Total rockstar. You must see the videos and gifs of her at Jezebel.com.
CEO: Sophia Amoruso, founder of cult online fashion company Nastygal.com. After starting the company in 2006 at just 22, the company has grown 500% each year and makes over 125 million dollars a year!
Writer: E. L. James, author of 50 Shades of Grey. Yes, I’ve read the trilogy. While it’s not the best writing out there, James has empowered millions of women to push their boundaries in the bedroom, demand a bit more from their men and get their big O.
Scientist: There are just too many amazing female scientists forging ahead in one of the last fields with a super strong boys club in the higher ranks. I have to be partial to this list of STEM scientists making progress in and out of the lab, since I’m on it.
Celebpreneur: It’s a tie between Jessica Simpson, former singer and now owner of the multimillion dollar Jessica Simpson line of shoes, clothing and just about everything else, and Jessica Alba, founder of The Honest Company, a cult site for non-toxic baby products.
Philanthropist: Melinda Gates is the amazing wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Yes, they’re rich and it’s easy to give money away when you’ve got more of it than you need to feed your line all the way to your great-to-the-20th-power-grandkids, but it’s her vision that makes her worthy of this award. Gates gives away money to causes that are “morally” controversial to conservatives (aka everyone else with loads of money) but desperately needed. Case in point: she gave $560 million to fund contraception for women in 3rd-world countries.
